Gum Disease and Cirrhosis

Bacterial infections in the mouth are bad news for the rest of the body. But that also means dental cleanings can have unexpected benefits. At the general dentistry practice of Holmdel’s Dr. Dipika Shah, we see ourselves as a crucial part of each patient’s medical care team. We’re excited to share news that gum disease treatments may be able to ease symptoms of cirrhosis.

Each of us depends on our liver to filter toxic substances from our blood. If it becomes chronically inflamed, it may become covered in scar tissue and be unable to do that. People with cirrhosis are suffering from liver scarring, and as a result, they have increased inflammation throughout their bodies, including in their brains. Their temperament and cognitive function can be impaired as a result. People with cirrhosis also have elevated rates of gum disease, and while the two share some common causes, gum infections are also unusually common in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and gum disease-causing bacteria have been found in livers.

Scientists at Virginia Commonwealth University recently conducted an experiment to determine how gum disease treatments affect people with cirrhosis. Their finding was that patients who received treatment had better cognition and higher counts of anti-inflammatory gut bacteria than cirrhosis patients whose dental treatments were delayed. We hope that any of our patients who are late for a deep cleaning will take this as a reminder of how much better a person can feel after visiting the dentist.

Bite Checks

Do you wonder if your children are going to need braces? Are you worried their crooked teeth might be causing problems with their teeth, gum and jaw? As a family practice that offers orthodontic treatment, we at the Holmdel dental office of Dr. Dipika Shah can monitor the development of children’s teeth and spot problems early at in-house at biannual check-ups.

It is best if orthdontic needs are observed at earlier age and treated while they are going through their growth period to guide everything in a correct direction rather than waiting till their bone completely matures and harder to make changes.

At each biannual check-up, we take x-rays of children’s mouths to determine whether their teeth are coming in straight. Depending on what we see, we may recommend extractions or early-stage orthodontic therapy. The first orthodontic assessment is usually done at age seven. We will also examine whether each child is able to close their teeth together comfortably and whether there are unusual patterns of wear that could indicate that a misaligned tooth is impeding jaw function.

Have You Had A Cleaning This Year?

At the dental practice of Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS we encourage all our patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings.  During the holidays, we want everyone looking forward to the New Year and maintaining great oral hygiene!  However much you brush and floss, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.

It’s important to see a professional regularly not just to clean your teeth, but also to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine.  During a teeth cleaning, a hygienist thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. After the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, the hygienist flosses between every one of your teeth and may apply fluoride if recommended by the dentist. Come see us for a cleaning to make a great impression during the holidays, and start the year off with your best smile!

Apicoectomy

A root canal is a treatment that is used to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth. During root canal treatment, your dentist cleans the canals using special instruments called files to remove inflamed or infected tissue. Root canal treatment is to conservatively treat infection and it has 90 % success. Sometimes, infection does not clear even after performing root canal, Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS may suggest an apicoectomy.

Root canals may become re-infected for a variety of reasons. These include new or recurrent decay, previously undetected accessory (extra) canals branching from the primary canal at the root end of the tooth, and occasionally, calcification of canals. An apicoectomy is done only after a tooth has had at least one root canal procedure and retreatment has not been successful. It is a minor surgical procedure in which the very tip of the tooth’s root is removed and sealed.

If you have a tooth infection related to a root canal gone wrong, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Diabetes and Gum Disease

If you have gum inflammation, diabetes may be to blame. We strive to meet all our patients’ unique oral health needs at Dr. Dipika Shah’s Holmdel dental practice. Since uncontrolled blood sugar correlates with gum infections, we want our patients to have a better understanding of how this process works and how we can help them to avoid gum recession.

Gum disease is caused by the accumulation of acid-producing bacteria in the gum pockets. Infections trigger the body’s inflammatory response, which helps to keep pathogens from spreading. Unfortunately, inflammation also is painful and weakens the walls of cells. This is particularly problematic for people with diabetes, who have higher rates of inflammation and whose arteries have hardened in response to excessive blood sugar. People with diabetes are more severely impacted by infections in general, and they have higher rates of gum disease and its advanced form, periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease causes gum and bone recession to the point where teeth are in danger of falling out. But if people see us in time, we can help them to avoid this by providing deep cleanings of the gum pockets. Gum infections make it harder for the body to regulate blood sugar, producing a feedback loop. But treating gum disease leads to an improvement in diabetic symptoms, so we hope anybody with diabetes and bleeding gums will not delay seeking treatment.

Avoiding Tooth Decay During the Holidays

There are lots of sugary drinks and snacks available in the fall. With Thanksgiving fast approaching and the winter holidays right around the corner, we at Dr. Dipika Shah’s Holmdel dental practice want our patients to enjoy the festivities without the risk of tooth decay. We thought it would be a good idea to point out some common sources of sugar and how to maintain good hygiene while indulging in them.

The longer sugar is in contact with teeth, the longer bacteria will be feeding on it and producing acid. Sticky, sugary foods such as cranberry sauce can fuel tooth decay, as can caramels and hard candy, which remains in contact with the teeth for an extended period and tends to dry out the mouth. Other major sources of sugary residue are sweet or creamy beverages such as apple cider, lattes, hot chocolate, and wine. People should also keep a watch on debris from starchy snacks such as crackers, since starch is also food for bacteria.

Substituting sugary hard candies with xylitol-flavored ones will remove a source of tooth decay and stimulate saliva production. Chewing sugar-free gum between meals will also dislodge food debris if a person isn’t able to brush and floss right away. You can mitigate the residue from sugary drinks by interspersing sips of water while consuming them. If you won’t have access to fluoridated tap water, you can carry fluoridated water in bottles. And while crackers may leave a lot of debris, cheese contains vital minerals for strengthening enamel.

Oral Care with Dental Implants

Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge.  Although they are not natural teeth, they still require conscientious at-home oral care and regular dental visits. This is why Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS can provide patients with a dental implant maintenance routine after the implants are placed and healed.

Cleaning implant-supported tooth replacements are just as important as cleaning natural teeth, as both depend on healthy surrounding tissues for support. If the titanium oxide layer of the dental implant is disrupted during oral hygiene procedures, the soft tissues may be exposed to titanium metallic ions that can cause potential cytotoxic reactions compromising the dental implant. Unless instructed differently by Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, aim for brushing the teeth at least twice a day and floss between them at least once a day to eliminate bacteria in the mouth and prevent implant failure.

If you have questions or concerns about dental implants or restorative dentistry, please give us a call. Benefits of a Custom-Fitted Mouthguard

Wearing a mouthguard is an important precaution for athletes of all ages and abilities, helping to protect against chipped or broken teeth, root and bone damage, and tooth loss. For a small cost, a properly fitted mouthguard can prevent anxiety, risk, injury, pain, suffering, and can even prevent years of dental treatment. Whether you’re on the court, on the rink, or on the field, Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, can prepare a custom-fitted mouthguard for her athletic patients.

Not only do mouthguards protect the teeth, but they also protect the head against a blow to the jaw that can result in a concussion and/or loss of consciousness. For the highest level of comfort and protection, you should always visit a dentist for a custom mouthguard fitting. Custom mouthguards are made from exact and precise models of an individual’s own teeth and are made of resilient and tear resistant materials to ensure a proper fit.

Replacing Teeth With Implants

Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS replaces teeth and restores patient smiles with dental implants. Implants are a permanent restorative option for teeth that are missing or have been extracted.  They look and feel like natural teeth, and are the most permanent and efficient means of replacing lost teeth.

Implants are titanium screws insertedinto the jaw bone. Over a period of 3-6 months, the jaw bone heals around the implant to become a solid, stable base for the new tooth. During this time a patient is fitted with a temporary crown, and a custom crown is created to match their smile perfectly.

After the jaw bone and gums have healed appropriately, the custom crown is placed in a secondappopintment.Sometimes, doctor may  may need to expose the head of the implant in a second minor surgery.  When everythingis healed,   the crown will be screwed  or cemented to the top of the implant.  When this is complete the tooth looks like part of the natural smile, and with proper care will last for decades!

Smoking With Sleep Apnea

Smoking will exacerbate any respiratory condition, and it is proven to cause snoring and lead to obstructive sleep apnea.  Patients struggling with sleep apnea should see Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS and her staff for evaluation. We can help patients find relief from sleep apnea, but quitting smoking is up to you!

Smoking causes upper airway inflammation, meaning the swelling causes the airway to narrow and disrupts the flow of air to the nasal passage and throat.  This causes snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.  Cigarettes are highly addictive, and some smokers seek treatment for sleep apnea but continue to smoke. Smoking with sleep apnea not only puts more stress on the heart every day, but negates any treatment a sleep apnea patient is undergoing.

Habitual smokers may feel relaxed by one last cigarette for the day, but it actually creates more complications for restful sleep. Smokers can experience nicotine withdrawal overnight, causing more waking up and restlessness.  Quitting smoking cold turkey is very difficult, but even lessening the amount of cigarettes or avoiding smoking at nighttime can help you achieve more restful sleep.  Most smokers cannot quit on their own or on their first attempt, so don’t get discouraged!

Alleviate Facial Pain with Botox

For over 20 years, Botox has commonly been used to erase unsightly frown lines and/or wrinkles. Recently, Botox has developed a popular reputation in the dental industry as a therapeutic use for facial pain due to TMJ/TMD. This is because Botox contains a tiny dose of botulinum which has the ability to decrease facial pain associated with this condition. If you’ve exhausted your treatment options for eliminating facial pain, schedule a consultation with Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, to see if Botox is right for you.

TMD, commonly known as a temporomandibular joint disorder, is a condition associated with pain in the jaw and facial muscles, which can cause headaches, earaches, and general facial pain. During the procedure, Botox will be injected into the facial muscles without any sensory loss. This allows the facial muscles to relax, instead of contracting, which typically causes pain. There are other dental conditions that are sometimes treated using Botox, but Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, will recommend the usage of this substance as she sees fit.

If you have questions or concerns regarding Botox, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.dentistnj.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, here in our Holmdel, NJ office, call 732-264-8180.

Laser Therapy for Canker Sores

An estimated 57% of the population suffers from “cold sores,” (AKA oral herpes simplex), while an estimated 10% of the population has “canker sores.” When these painful sores arise in or near the oral cavity,  Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS can significantly reduce healing time with soft tissue laser therapy. This type of treatment is a safe and effective way to alleviate discomfort without injections.

Canker sores can make eating and speaking painful and are typically brought on by an acidic diet. Unlike cold sores which typically form on the outside of the mouth, canker sores develop inside and cause the patient little or severe discomfort. Laser therapy treatment is inexpensive and the procedure itself may last about 15-20 minutes. If you have a canker sore that doesn’t heal itself in two weeks, discuss your treatment options with Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS.

If you have questions or concerns regarding laser therapy or dental technology, please give us a call. Pediatric Dentistry

At the dental practice of Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS we want the families from our community to know it’s just as important for children to have regular dental visits.  A child’s first dental visit should be scheduled between when the first baby tooth appears, and the child’s first birthday.  Baby teeth eventually come out, but their growth and development is important for overall oral health for the child and the development of their adult teeth. Baby teeth should be brushed and cared for like adult teeth, and it’s important to monitor their growth and development.

Missing any tooth for too long can change the development of surrounding teeth and compromise the structure of the jaw bone, but regular checkups can keep a child’s tooth development right on track.  We are skilled and experienced in administering dental care to children.  If your child has seems nervous about seeing a dentist for the first time, call us we will guide you as it is very important how and what you say to get your child ready for his/her first dental visit.  Once we get your child’s oral health off to a great start, we offer a full range of services for child patients including dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants.

We love to see good oral hygiene habits formed early, and make lifetime patients out of kids from our community!  To learn more about the services provided at the practice, visit www.dentistnj.com for more information. Not only is she a wonderful dentist but she and her staff have always graciously accommodated us during emergencies or when our schedules have been tight. My first visit to her was on an emergency basis and her treatment saved me from hospitalization. My children, who are young adults now, had their first dental visits with Dr. Shah. She always made them feel comfortable and took the time to instruct them well about the care of their teeth. Neither of them has ever had a cavity, nor have they ever been afraid to seek dental care. Orthodontics and Mouthguards

As providers of orthodontic treatment, we at Dr. Dipika Shah’s Holmdel dental practice want to make sure our patients are safe playing contact sport. Everyone who plays contact sport should wear Mouth guard, including those who are going through active orthodontic treatment.

Most sports require players to wear a mouthguard, There are several kinds of mouthguards commercially available, including ones that are pre-fitted and ones that a patient bites down on after softening in hot water. All mouthguards are not same. Commericailly avalable ones do not protect you as well as the ones which are made by dentists.

That's why dentists recommend that patients get their mouthguards custom-fitted. But this can be a problem for patients undergoing orthodontic treatment because their teeth are quickly shifting position. It is likely now that school is beginning that a teenager’s mouthguard from the previous year will not still fit them. In these cases, it is important to have the mouthguard regularly updated so that it will fit snugly over orthodontic brackets without needing to be forced on.

Sleep Apnea and Alcohol

Holmdel dentist Dr. Dipika Shah offers custom-made oral appliances for people suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This disease can not only lead to teeth-grinding, it can also cause heart disease and oxygen deprivation to your vital organs. There are certain risk factors people can avoid to reduce their chance of developing OSA and we want to make sure our patients are aware of them.

Alcohol can cause OSA even in people who don’t normally suffer from it. OSA is the result of throat tissues or tongue not allowing air flow. People who have it commonly snore and move their jaws in their sleep in an attempt to get more air. As a muscle relaxant, alcohol makes throat obstruction likelier. It also causes people to take longer to wake up after they stop breathing, preventing their blood from getting vital oxygen and potentially contributing to sleep paralysis.

An oral appliance will prevent the patient from grinding their teeth and help them breath better. Patients can do their part by not drinking alcohol before bed. People with OSA often do not know they have it, but sleepiness d the day uring day time and grinding teeth can be major warning signs.

Different Types of Dentures

If you have teeth that are weak or missing, there are different ways to replace missing teeth, namely Fixed bridge, dentures or implants. Cost and work involved for each procedure varies.  Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS may suggest dentures to restore your smile. Dentures come in different forms – full and partial – full dentures will replace the entire set of teeth, while partial dentures will only replace the teeth that are missing. Repairing a toothless smile with dentures will improve your appearance and help you eat and speak more comfortably.

Complete (full) dentures are used if you’re missing teeth in your upper (maxillary) or lower (mandibular) jaws. Partial dentures are used on patients who only have some teeth missing on either jaw. Complete dentures replace all of the teeth, while partial dentures fill in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevent other teeth from shifting position. Those dentures can also be supported with implants in order to give more retention and stability.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Gum Disease

At Dr. Dipika Shah’s Holmdel dental practice, we recognize that each of our patients has unique oral health needs that require compassionate, nonjudgmental care. One of the most frustrating conditions for patients is rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which doctors have recently discovered is linked to gum disease in unexpected ways.

According to a Johns Hopkins study, gum disease is twice as common in people with RA as in the general population. While this could partly be due to the difficulty people with limited dexterity have maintaining their oral hygiene, the study found that gum disease is common even in people whose RA has not yet progressed to that point. RA is an autoimmune disorder that causes the lining of joints, called synovium, to swell because they are under attack from the body’s immune system. Another study found that synovium shares genetic and structural traits with gum tissue, suggesting they are being harmed in similar ways.

One of the most significant steps people can take to avoid RA is to not smoke. But if a patient is suffering from RA, they can maintain their oral hygiene more easily with electric toothbrushes and water picks, as well as by maintaining regular appointments at our office.

Orthodontic Tools

As a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry, Holmdel’s Dr. Dipika Shah is equipped to provide expert orthodontic treatment. Having straight teeth comes with many health benefits as well as more self-confidence with a beautiful smile. We want our patients to  feel comfortable with their treatment, Children or adult can get their teeth straightened.

Starightening of wire can be done with either braces or with aligners. Braces give lot better control to dentist and parents as we do not have to worry about whether child wears it or not. But they do colllect lots of food and patient has to be very good at oral hygiene in order to keep teeth and gums healthy. Aligners allow patients can easily clean their teeth but patient has to make sure that they brush and floss before they wear aligners. Also if child is not cooperative or responsible to wear as suggested, it will not work.

Digital X-rays

Dental X-rays are an important part of a routine exam. Dental X-rays allow Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS to accurately diagnose and treat dental problems early before they become problematic. X-rays allow Dr. Shah to see between and inside the teeth. Due to advancements in dental technology, Dr. Shah utilizes digital X-rays that use up to 90% less radiation than film X-rays, making them safer for patients. We have digital X-rays for many years.

Our digital X-ray system is designed with the patient in mind and is much more sensitive to radiation. Additional patient advantages include avoidance of chemical processing errors, which means that Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, will be able to take a closer look at the teeth and surrounding structures with astounding accuracy. Digital X-rays are rapidly becoming approved by a large percent of the dental industry.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Risks

Sleep apnea poses a high risk of dangerous health conditions in patients who are diagnosed with the condition. Obstructive sleep apnea happens when something partly, or completely, blocks the upper airway during sleep. The condition can reduce the flow of oxygen to vital organs and cause irregular heart rhythms. Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, can provide treatment options to help manage obstructive sleep apnea and improve your quality of sleep and health.

In obstructive sleep apnea, an individual’s breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Because the airway is blocked, a person may snort, take a deep breath, or awaken gasping for air. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to serious health complications such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure. For people with mild to moderate sleep apnea, dental appliances that prevent the tongue from blocking the throat may be suggested.

What is Gum Contouring?

At the dental practice of Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS we see many patients who are unhappy with their smiles for various reasons.  The overall look of your smile includes the gums, and even when a patient has healthy teeth and gums they may be dissatisfied with the overall appearance of their smile due to excess gum tissue or a lack of tissue.  Gum contouring is a way to give any patient their best smile.

A lack of or excess of gum tissue can cause a smile to have the look of elongated teeth or a gummy smile.  To create a balanced look between gum and tooth, a gum contouring procedure can include removing gum tissue, placing gum grafts, or both.  Excess tissue is removed using a laser or scalpel tool.  Soft tissue grafts are harvested from a healthy location in the patient’s mouth, and placed where gum tissue is lacking or has receded.  The result is an even ratio of tooth to gums throughout the whole mouth.  Don’t let your gums keep you from your best smile!

Nocturnal Bruxism

Waking up with facial pain may seem like no big deal, but it’s something to think about. Teeth clenching and grinding are symptoms of a condition called bruxism. Though bruxism can occur while a person is awake, it commonly happens while the patient is asleep. Nocturnal bruxism can be a sign of a sleep disorder. If you snore or clench or grind your teeth, it’s best to schedule a consultation with Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS.

Teeth clenching and grinding can lead to enamel damage, broken teeth, headaches and even temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Though there is no actual cause of bruxism, some consider it a person’s way of coping with stress and anxiety. If you are experiencing jaw pain, or discomfort, Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS may suggest a TMJ splint, night guard,  snore or sleep apnea appliance for you to wear during sleep. Easing Dental Anxiety in Patients

Most of us look forward to visiting the dentist as much as we enjoy visiting the doctor’s office. It’s not necessarily exciting, but it’s something that needs to be done. Past bad dental experience to you or your loved ones can cause anxiety and if you let that dectate you and do not visit dentist,  it can put your oral health status on a downward spiral. Dental anxiety can leave people panic-stricken and terrified, but Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, can ease your fears and make you feel as comfortable as possible during your dental procedure.

There is nothing wrong with being afraid of oral pain, dental instruments, or injections before a dental procedure.  People with dental fear are at a greater risk for developing periodontal disease as well as early tooth loss. Before your appointment, be sure to discuss your fears with our staff and ask about our  options.

Veneers

At the dental practice of Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, her patients are always asking about the latest cosmetic solutions for their teeth. Some fixes are recommended just to repair damage or to whiten, but veneers remain one of the best ways to give your mouth a total makeover. Veneers are custom-made porcelain shells that bond directly to the surface of your teeth.  This gives you the opportunity to completely change the appearance of your smile and still look natural.

Patients with cosmetic issues like staining, cracked or chipped teeth, and even crooked teeth and small gaps can achieve a dazzling smile with veneers. You can have a new smile using veneers in as little as two visits. First, your dentist will discuss the shape and look you want for your new smile.  Then an impression of your teeth is taken in order to custom-fit the final product to the surfaces of your teeth. On your final visit, the veneers are bonded to your teeth for you to wear and enjoy!

Sleep Apnea and the Heart

Sleep apnea is not only a serious medical condition, but left untreated it can lead to a plethora of other health issues and is dangerous for the heart.  A patient with sleep apnea does not breathe properly during sleep, resulting in low oxygen levels throughout the entire body. Breathing supplies lungs with oxygen but also the rest of the body.  When there is a lack of oxygen, the part of the heart responsible for moving oxygenated blood to the organs and extremities is forced to work extra hard.  This can cause an enlarged heart and eventually heart failure.

Those living with untreated sleep apnea are at a higher risk of developing irregular heartbeats, and also have a higher risk for a stroke and heart attack.  Men with untreated sleep apnea are actually living with double the risk for a stroke.  If you have yet to find a solution for sleep apnea, please visit Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS for a consultation.  She can fit patients with a snore guard in just one visit, which has helped many people avoid the negative effects of sleep apnea.

The Importance of Regular Cleanings

It is recommended by the Academy of General Dentistry to have a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months.  Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS encourages all her patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings.  However much you brush and floss, we are all human and may miss one or two areas, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.

It’s important to see a professional regularly to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine.  During a teeth cleaning, we clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. After the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, we flosses between every one of your teeth and may apply fluoride if recommended by the dentist.

What is TMD?

The temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw bone (mandible) to the temporal bones in your skull, in front of each ear.  A general term for any problem or issue with this joint is temporomandibular disorder, or TMD.  Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS can help patients prevent and recover from negative effects of TMD.

Patients that grind or clench their teeth often end up with a sore jaw.  Other patients experience injuries with facial trauma that cause jaw pain, or result in the patient feeling their jaw gets stuck or ‘locks’ in either an open or closed position.  A custom TMJ splint helps many patients find relief from TMD symptoms.  For any pain, your dentist may recommend an over-the-counter painkiller or warm and cold compresses.  To prevent further discomfort, you may be assigned stretches for your jaw.

Whatever your symptoms, you don’t have to suffer with discomfort in your jaw.  To learn more about TMD and the services we provide at the practice, visit www.dentistnj.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dipika Shah DDS, here in our Holmdel, NJ office, call 732-264-8180.

Causes of Gap Teeth

If you’ve got a gap between your upper front teeth and want to get rid of it, Holmdel’s Dr. Dipika Shah has you covered. But what kind of treatment is best will depend on a few factors, some of which are related to other issues.

If the teeth are otherwise in alignment, veneers may be all that's needed to close a gap. These shells are cemented onto the fronts of the teeth, covering gaps as well as cracks, chips, and stains. But if the teeth are twisted or there are gaps between the other teeth, as well, orthodontic treatment may be preferable. Cosmetic orthodontic corrections can be done with Invisalign while more advanced work requires traditional braces. Patients will have to wear retainers afterward regardless of which kind of orthodontic treatment they get or the gap may reopen.

Sometimes, especially when accompanied by an overbite, a gap develops in response to pressure on the teeth. Tongue thrusting and thumb sucking can both push the front teeth apart and have to be resolved to prevent the gap from returning. (This may require help from another specialist, such as an ear, nose, and throat doctor.) If the labial frenum, the strip of tissue connecting the inside of the upper lip to the jaw is enlarged, it has to be surgically reduced for the teeth to be able to move together and stay together. We have laser to take care of that attachment so no pain and no bleeding.

White Spot Lesions

When tooth decay is developing, there are warning signs. At Dr. Dipika Shah’s Holmdel dental practice, we don’t want our patients to miss a warning that they need to pay more attention to their brushing, which is why we’re spreading the word about white spot lesions.

The development of white spots on tooth enamel is the first visible sign of erosion. (For this reason, they are also called “incipient” lesions.) The spots have a chalky appearance, similar to that caused by the early stage of acid reflux-related erosion. They are most commonly seen in the spots where plaque accumulates, such as near the gum line or surrounding an orthodontic bracket. White spots can form in just a month, and if the bracket they’re surrounding is removed, the patient will be left with white hollow rectangles on their teeth.

Better brushing is the key to preventing tooth decay. We encourage patients who are at elevated risk for tooth decay due to factors such as diabetes and dry mouth to talk to us about infection control. If a lesion has already developed but its progress has been arrested, the patient may benefit from remineralization therapy. Avoiding the risk of white spots is also a major reason why people choose Invisalign over fixed braces.

TMJD and Sleep Apnea

As a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry, Holmdel’s Dr. Dipika Shah can treat more than just teeth. Two most common oral problems for patients are snoring/sleep apnea and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD). We want our patients to understand more about it.

When a patient has obstructive sleep apnea, their airways are blocked during sleep. it can be treated with a simle dental appliance to let you  breath better and feel lot more energetic. Teeth grinding (bruxism), which wears down tooth enamel, making the teeth sensitive. It also puts additional pressure on the jaw. The temporomandibular joint which connects the lower jaw to the head is a complex structure that has to allow the jaw a full range of motion while withstanding the force  every time a patient bites down. Strain to it can result in pain throughout the neck , head ears and shoulders and  ringing in the ears, dizziness, vertigo, clicking and popping sound from the jaw joint.

Filling a Cavity

A cavity is something that Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS hopes her patients never encounter. Though they are common, a cavity is a hole in the tooth that develops from dental decay. Tooth decay occurs because oral care habits  are lacking or nonexistent and poor choice of diet. Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS is happy to give patients a refresher in oral care if they need one, otherwise, down the road, you may need to discuss filling options.

At her dental practice, Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS utilizes tooth-colored fillings. This is because tooth-colored fillings resemble the appearance of a natural tooth and blend-in well with the rest of the teeth. Composite resins such as these conserve the tooth and provide more support than metal fillings. They are also a safer alternative to maintaining a healthy smile.

Don’t Use Your Teeth as Tools

If you’ve ever used your teeth to bite/cut your nails, open a package or have used them as scissors to remove plastic ties, or tape, Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS is here to tell you why you should break these bad oral habits. Using your teeth as tools for foreign objects can cause them to crack, chip, or fracture. Though Dr. Shah has the materials to restore and repair a tooth that has been damaged, she would much rather you protect them in the first place.

It can be tempting to use your teeth as tools, but this is more of an impulsive habit. When you get the urge to clench, or nibble on your nails, reach for some healthy food to combat the impulse. Additionally, chewing on hard objects such as ice, popcorn kernels, and hard candy can cause teeth to become painful, sensitive, and may require a root canal or a dental crown if you are not careful.

Permanent Retainer after Orthodontic Treatment

The day has come, where you complete orthodontic treatment and anticipate the removal of brackets and wires. If you’ve completed Invisalign treatment, you’ll need to have the “pucks” or “bumps” removed from the teeth. Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, doesn’t want all of your hard work to go to waste, which is why she is eager to discuss retainer options that best suit your needs. Though removable retainers are a common option, permanent retainers, also known as bonded retainers, are available as well.

A bonded retainer is a very thin piece of wire that is attached to the back of the teeth once orthodontic treatment is complete. It won’t be visible, but you may feel a slight pressure as this method works to keep teeth straight during all hours of the day. Bonded retainers may take some getting used to, but one of the biggest advantages is that you won’t have to remember to place your non-removable retainer in the mouth. If you decide to be fitted with a bonded retainer, be sure to discuss oral hygiene options with Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, as flossing becomes slightly more difficult.

If you have questions or concerns about orthodontic treatment or aftercare options, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.dentistnj.com for more information. Oral Cancer and Alcohol

Holmdel’s Dr. Dipika Shah has been part of the care team for many oral cancer patients. In order to help prevent more people from getting this disease, we at our dental office wanted to pass along the findings of a new report by the American Society of Clinical Oncologists (ASCO) which found a connection between oral cancer and alcohol.

Many people are unaware of the fact that alcohol is a contributor to cancer, but the ASCO found that alcohol is the cause of about 5-6% of new cancer cases each year. That statistic included cancer in the oral cavity and the esophagus. In fact, oral cancer, unlike liver cancer, is something drinkers are at increased risk for even if they only use alcohol in moderation. The type of alcohol consumed (hard liquor vs. beer and wine) did not appear to have any impact, but the risk was heightened if the patient also smoked. Because so many people are unaware that alcohol is carcinogenic, many of them continue to drink alcohol after being diagnosed with cancer and oral chemotherapy is often compromised as a result. We provide oral cancer screenings at Dr. Shah’s office at every dental check-up visit and help our patients to manage medication side-effects such as dry mouth, but we hope this information will lead to fewer cases and better outcomes.

Children's Dental Health Month

Dr. Dipika Shah of Holmdel is proud to run a family dental office that provides compassionate, well-informed care to children. Every February, the American Dental Association celebratesChildren’s Dental Health Month along with many volunteer dentists, their staff, and dental suppliers. This year’s theme is the use of fluoridated toothpaste.

Fluoridation provides teeth with more robust defense against the acid produced by oral bacteria. People who drink fluoridated water have better dental health than those who drink well water, and the topical fluoride treatments we provide reduce children’s chances of developing caries. However, it is still important for them to brush regularly. Decay in baby teeth is painful and has an adverse impact on children’s sleeping, eating,  speech development and affects permanent tooth that develops underneath the baby tooth. Additionally, brushing their teeth is often the first thing children learn to do to care for their own health and helps to get them into a lifetime of good habits.

Brushing should be done for two minutes per session with a soft-bristled toothbrush and should be done on every tooth surface, as well as the tongue.  Additional fluoride supplements should not be given to children, as it may cause their teeth may develop white patches. Dentists give topical fluoride and make sure that child does not swallow it thereby getting the best benefit. Dr. Dipika Shah, Master in the Academy of General Dentistry, operates at 723 N Beers St, Suite 2F, Holmdel, New Jersey, 07733-1512. To schedule an appointment, call 732-264-8180 or visit Dentist NJ and fill out a contact form.

Mini Dental Implants

If missing teeth have you frowning, more than smiling, Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS has the solution. Dental implants are an excellent way to aesthetic repair a tooth while restoring it back to its natural function. In her Holmdel, NJ, office, Dr. Shah utilizes regular and mini-implants. Mini dental implants are a cost-efficient alternative to regular dental implants and also requires less surgery so it can be a good alternative for patients with some of the medical conditions where regular implants may be higher risk.  To determine if mini-implants are right for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Shah.

Mini dental implants make placement much easier since they are small in diameter. They are ideal for a patient who is looking to replace missing teeth but doesn’t want to go through the process of invasive implant surgery. Mini dental implants have the same structure as regular dental implants but are smaller in form. Additionally, they can still provide a sturdy foundation for replacement teeth, such as bridges and fixed crowns.

Teeth and Pacifiers

Parents often struggle with weaning their child off a pacifier.  Infants are soothed to a sense of security by pacifiers, and when the time comes it is one of the hardest habits to break.  It can require a great deal of persuasion, but because of the effect they can have on the growth and development of the teeth and mouth children should stop using pacifiers by the age of two.  Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS always welcomes new patients, especially those who have yet to wean off of the pacifier.

Prolonged pacifier use can cause changes in the shape of the roof of the mouth, prevent proper growth of the mouth, and create problems with tooth alignment.  Narrowing of the roof of the mouth and misalignment of the jaws can also occur.  Using a pacifier too long can also lead to a variety of complications including tilting in of the bottom teeth, and slanting in of the top and front teeth. Until the age of two, any alignment problem with the teeth or developing bone is usually corrected within six months after pacifier use has stopped.  We can help and support parents having any trouble weaning their child off a pacifier before that age.

If you have questions about pacifiers and teeth development, visit www.dentistnj.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dipika Shah DDS, here in our Holmdel, NJ office, call 732-264-8180.

Caring for Clear Aligners

Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS recommends Invisalign for patients with mild to moderate spacing or crowding of the teeth.  Invisalign’s clear aligner system straightens teeth without the metallic look of braces. Another perk of Invisalign clear aligners is that they require less maintenance and won’t prevent you from eating certain foods.  Although you won’t have to make too many changes, there are still guidelines you should follow to wear and care for your aligners!

You should remove Invisalign each time you eat, but if you do eat anything while wearing the aligners make sure to clean them thoroughly afterwards. It is also best to brush and floss your teeth before putting the aligners back in.  Ideally when wearing clear aligners, you would only drink water. Colorful drinks can stain the aligners and too many hot drinks can eventually warp the plastic.  If you do drink anything other than water while wearing the aligners you should rinse them with warm water afterwards.

Cleaning the clear aligners regularly is important for your teeth and straightening treatment.  Clear aligners can become discolored over time without losing their effectiveness, but the color can show on your own teeth and continue to darken.  Invisalign offers its own brand of cleaning solution, and there are several soaking solutions available over the counter, but brushing the aligners is also a sufficient cleaning option.  Do not use toothpaste to brush the aligners because subtle abrasive properties of toothpaste could harm the aligner.  It is best to use a mild dish soap and a soft bristle brush to clean the aligners each time you brush your teeth.

If you have any more questions about Invisalign, visit www.dentistnj.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dipika Shah DDS, here in our Holmdel, NJ office, call 732-264-8180.

Tooth Sensitivity

Below our enamel is a part of the tooth called dentin. Dentin contains microscopic canals that contain nerves and roots. When these roots become exposed, it can cause a tremendous amount of pain. If biting into an apple or drinking a hot cup of coffee makes your teeth wince in pain, then you may be a victim of tooth sensitivity. Fortunately, Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, can help you take the proper measures to reduce the sensitivity and help you improve your oral hygiene technique.

If your oral hygiene routine is adequate but you still suffer from sensitive teeth, perhaps you are brushing too hard. If you use too much force while brushing your teeth, discomfort and sensitivity will occur. Sensitive teeth can also be caused by an underlying condition called bruxism, in which a patient grinds his or her teeth. Treatment for tooth sensitivity will depend on the cause, which Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS can evaluate during your next dental appointment.

If you have questions or concerns regarding tooth sensitivity, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.dentistnj.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, here in our Holmdel, NJ office, call 732-264-8180.

Sedation Options

Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS understands that not all of her patients feel comfortable in the dental chair. This is why she offers a variety of sedation options to patients who wish to ease their anxiety during a dental procedure. The most common form of sedation utilized in the office is nitrous oxide, a safe and effective sedative agent that is also known as laughing gas.

Nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas” is not intended to put you to sleep. Instead, nitrous oxide allows patients to be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions that Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, may have. After deciding if this form of sedation is right for you, Dr. Shah will ask you to breathe normally through your nose. Within a few short minutes, you will begin to feel the effects of the nitrous oxide by feeling very relaxed, no anxiety. Before you leave, nitrous oxide is turned off an you are given 100% oxygen to breath so you feel completely normal as you leave our office, no one needs to drive you and no need to fast before the procedure.

If you have questions or concerns regarrding this, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.dentistnj.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Dipika Shah, DDS, here in our Holmdel, NJ office, call 732-264-8180.
